David Benyamine
David Benyamine is a poker pro that was born and raised in France, and he still lives there today. In his early adulthood, Benyamine was a championship-caliber tennis player, but a crippling back injury ended his tennis career. After he was forced from the court, he took up the game of billiards, and his competitive streak made him one of France's top players. It was about then that Benyamine discovered poker.
David had a friend that worked in one of Paris' smaller card rooms, and he accompanied him to work one night, realizing that he could make more by playing poker than he could by shooting pool. Benyamine started off slow, building a sizable bankroll and becoming one of the best high-stakes players in all of Europe. That wasn't enough though; he thought he needed a new challenge.
Europe's tournament circuit was growing rapidly, and David Benyamine was ready to get started. He won his first official tournament in 1999, at Paris' Aviation Club. The year after that, he won two tournaments at festivals there, and he enjoyed continued success over the following few years.
David Benyamine finally made it to America during the WPT's first season, he beat Erick Lindgren and Daniel Negreanu at the 2003 Grand Prix de Paris. In 2005, he defeated Phil Laak, Noli Francisco, Mel Judah, Hoyt Corkins and Antonio Esfandiari to win the WPT's second Battle of the Champions. However, Benyamine's true ambition was to achieve greatness in the WSOP. He got his first cash finish there in 2007, and went on to have three final tables and five cash finishes in 2008. He won his first WSOP bracelet in summer of that year in the $10,000 buy-in Omaha Hi/Lo World Championship, getting $535,687.
2008 was a banner year for Benyamine. At that point, he'd earned over two million dollars in tournament play, and a runner-up finish on the WPT Bellagio.
2008 has definitely been Benyamine’s finest year as a tournament professional. David has earned well over $3 million and, along with that WSOP bracelet, has a runner up finish on the WPT at the Bellagio.
