Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson is a living poker legend; he is one of the few that started in poker's wilder days and helped to turn the game into the celebrity-studded, televised sport it is today. He is more than 75 years old, and the man nicknamed "Texas Dolly" is still one of the world's best poker players.

Brunson was born in Texas in the midst of the Great Depression; he worked on a family farm in a town of about one hundred people. He had a natural athletic talent that would allow him to have his pick of colleges across the country. He eventually decided to study education and was at one point drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA, but a severe knee injury ended his basketball career.

Before he was sidelined with a knee injury, he began to play poker, and his interest in the game picked up when he hurt himself. He finished school and got a Master's degree, but his life took a turn when he was invited to an after-work poker game and was able to earn as much money in three hours as he did in a month at his job.

Doyle Brunson became a rounder in Fort Worth, Texas, and went through some tough times. Hustling and cheating were a part of life for poker players back then- police were actively pursuing those that hosted games and robbers were more than willing to take someone's winnings at gunpoint. Eventually, he found himself in Vegas, playing poker against the likes of Benny Binion.

Doyle Brunson was among the players at the first World Series of Poker, winning his first title in 1976. In 1977 he won again, creating a hand named after himself- 10 and 2 hole cards. Brunson's career has spanned over forty years, and he has too many accomplishments to list here. He is the first player to ever win a million-dollar tournament and he has won over five million in tournament play.
